Are you looking to change your handlebars or fork and are hesitating between IHC, HIC, and SCS? Start by identifying the setup you currently have. A system name is not enough: the dimensions of the parts and the manufacturer's recommendations must match.
What is the purpose of compression?
Compression keeps the headset assembly properly adjusted. The handlebars must then be secured with the appropriate clamp. A well-assembled set allows you to ride without abnormal play or stiff spots.
The three systems, in a few points
- IHC: uses an IHC fork and kit, with compatible handlebars, usually slit at the base.
- HIC: combines a compatible fork, an HIC kit, and handlebars that are slit with an inner diameter adapted for HIC.
- SCS: the SCS clamp provides the compression and holds the handlebars. The setup normally uses bars without a slit; a slit bar requires an expressly compatible solution, such as an adapter designed for this purpose.
The outer diameter of the handlebars must also match the clamp. A setup compatible with one bar is not necessarily compatible with another, even if they look the same.
The checklist to prepare before your purchase
Gather this information in a single message or note:
- The brand, model, and version of your scooter.
- The reference of the fork and the current compression system.
- The reference of the handlebars, their inner and outer diameters, and the presence of a slit.
- The model of the clamp and any adapters already installed.
- The exact name of the new part you wish to install.
Photos of the setup and any markings on the parts can help. If the product description does not specify a diameter or standard, it is better to ask for this information than to infer compatibility from a photograph.
Mistakes that lead to ordering the wrong part
Relying solely on "oversized." This term does not replace the separate verification of the inner and outer diameters.
Changing one part without looking at the others. The cost of a conversion may include an additional fork, clamp, or kit. List everything required before comparing budgets.
Cutting or slitting the bar before validation. A modification changes the part and may affect its use or warranty. Have the solution confirmed by the manufacturer or the workshop before proceeding.Comparing parts and validating your setup
